This is currently one of my favorite series and, although you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you why. It started out as a series of books and now is embarking on it’s 8th and final television season. Though I didn’t read the books, I have read that the first season is pretty accurate to the novel, but the seasons after that are more like adaptations. With HBO holding the TV rights to the books, it’s been reported that producing a single episode costs up to ten million dollars on average. With each season having ten episodes, that’s a budget of at least one hundred million dollars. With the popularity and momentum, the show increasing nearly exponentially, it remains as the most pirated television series since 2012 (according to TorrentFreak). I don’t want to go too far into detail, so I’ll save you the spoiler alerts. I, however, want to unpack the medieval drama just a little. One, this is definitely one for mature audiences only. Although some of the most central characters still teenagers, it just goes to show just how much times have changed. Since it’s launch on TV there have been a number of other shows that have aired with a similar theme. Marriage schemes underlying claims to a thrown ruling several kingdoms. Not only is the author flourishing from the advent of the series airing on TV, but actors and actresses whose debut began with the show are now receiving more publicity, recognition, and awards than ever before. Not to mention the revenue that goes towards the network that airs it. With a budget of nearly one hundred million per season, it’s hard to imagine how much revenue the show is bring in. The franchise then increased its profits via a myriad of merchandise made available. Video games, board games, clothing and other accessories, podcasts, kitchen wear—whatever you can imagine, there are some die hard fans. It makes me wonder why people favor fantasy so much? Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones… these are some of the lengthiest series, and still people come together to relish in the minds of the creatives that brought it to fruition understand every small detail. You never know what idea is just looming in your head waiting to infatuate the masses. The authors of these aforenoted books have capitalized on their creativity, why can’t you?
