February 8th marks the birthday of Scouting in America. Did you know the American organization was started in D.C. back in 1910? Now Scouting groups across the country will serve sweets and camp out to celebrate. According to the Boy Scouts Association website, there were about 3.1 million boys in the program and 1.1 million leaders.
Originally the organization began 3 years before the American one in Britain. There is a lesson to be learned from their motto “Be Prepared”. They do more than camp out in the woods and sell goods. Their mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over the course of their lifetime by swearing by the Scout Oath and Law. They train young ones in responsible character development as well as how to be self-reliant. It is through the medium of outdoor activities and bonding retreats that these principles are able to be instilled at a young age. Though it started out as an organization strictly for boys, there are now a number of girls in the organization between the ages of 11 and 17.
The founding of the Boy Scouts of America is quite a warm story. There was a publisher from Chicago named Boyce who was visiting the U.K. when he ran into a bit of fog in the street and became lost. Boyce ran into a young man who happened to be a boy scout (we established the British program began just a few year’s prior to the Americans) was then willing to help him. When Boyce tried to tip the Boy Scout he refused as he insisted the aid was a part of his daily good deed. When Boyce returned home, he wasted little time getting the organization started for young American boys and later girls.
This year is an especially important anniversary because it marks the first year girls are allowed to enter the Cub Scout program. It is listed as a non-profit organization with special events revenues totaling to over $230 million. Though they are facing a number of controversial litigations, it’s important to highlight the authentic origins of such an organization focused core values by on enhancing self dependence and early establishment on youth identity.
